Ideal Weight Calculator – IBW by Height, Age & Body Frame

Calculate your ideal body weight online free - no login. Based on your height, gender, and frame size, get ideal weight ranges from multiple medical formulas.

About this tool

A single 'ideal weight' number is a simplification. Bone density, muscle mass, and body frame all affect what weight is actually healthy for a given person. Seeing the range across four formulas - and comparing it to BMI ranges - gives a more realistic picture than any single estimate.

Different medical formulas calculate ideal body weight differently. This calculator runs all four - Hamwi, Devine, Robinson, and Miller - so you can see the range rather than a single number that may not account for your frame or muscle mass.

How to use Ideal Weight Calculator

  1. Step 1: Enter Height. Input your height in cm or feet and inches.
  2. Step 2: Select Gender. Choose male or female for gender-specific formulas.
  3. Step 3: Calculate. See ideal weight from Hamwi, Devine, and Robinson formulas.
  4. Step 4: View Range. See your healthy weight range with a visual BMI context.

Where this tool helps

Check ideal body weight before starting a weight loss or gain program, compare your current weight against clinical IBW ranges, understand how different medical formulas estimate healthy weight, set a realistic goal weight for a fitness plan, check healthy weight range by height for reference, and track progress toward an evidence-based weight target.

  • Shows ideal weight from four established clinical formulas side by side.
  • Includes the BMI-based healthy weight range for your height as a reference point.
  • Supports both metric (cm/kg) and imperial (ft/lb) inputs.

The most common follow-up is whether ideal body weight is the same as a healthy BMI weight. They overlap but are not identical - IBW formulas were developed for clinical dosing purposes, while BMI ranges are population-based health indicators.

FAQs

Common questions about this tool and how to use it.

What is my ideal weight for my height?

Ideal body weight varies by formula. Using the Hamwi method for a 5'8" (173cm) adult male: 48 kg + 2.7 kg per inch over 5 feet = 48 + 21.6 = 69.6 kg. For a female of the same height: 45.5 kg + 2.2 kg per inch over 5 feet = 45.5 + 17.6 = 63.1 kg. The BMI-based healthy weight range for 173cm is 55–75 kg (BMI 18.5–24.9). Different formulas give slightly different numbers.

What is the difference between ideal weight and healthy weight?

Ideal body weight (IBW) is a clinical estimate developed for medical dosing purposes - it is a formula, not a health certification. Healthy weight is defined by BMI 18.5–24.9, which is a population-level statistical association with lower disease risk. The two concepts overlap but are not identical. You can be healthy above your IBW if you have higher-than-average muscle mass, and unhealthy at IBW if body fat percentage is high.

Why do different ideal weight calculators give different answers?

Different formulas were developed by different researchers with different assumptions and populations. Hamwi (1964) was developed for insulin dosing. Devine (1974) was developed for drug dosing in renal disease. Robinson, Miller, and other formulas followed with slight modifications. None were designed to define the 'best' weight for health - they are clinical tools repurposed as reference points.

Does muscle mass affect ideal body weight?

Yes significantly. IBW formulas assume average body composition. A person with high muscle mass will weigh more than their IBW suggests without being overweight by any health measure - muscle is denser than fat. Athletes, powerlifters, and people who strength train regularly often exceed IBW by 10–20% while having low body fat percentages.

What is a healthy weight range by height?

Using BMI 18.5–24.9 as the healthy range: For 160cm (5'3"): 47–64kg. For 170cm (5'7"): 53–72kg. For 180cm (5'11"): 60–81kg. For 190cm (6'3"): 67–90kg. These are ranges, not targets - where in the range is appropriate depends on body composition, age, and health status.
